This is a collection of recipes passed down by the Houghton sisters ~
Barbara, Dorcas & Frances.


An idea that became a reality when family bonded together to gather recipes from the past. I would like to thank everyone for their submissions. Many a memory we have from these tasty treats and hopefully by putting them all together ~
many more can be made.

Mocha Cakes

Mocha Cakes


½ c shortening

½ c sugar

2 c flour

½ c milk

2 eggs

2 c flour

2 tsp baking powder

dash of salt

Cream together wet ingredients.

Mix all dry ingredients and fold into wet mixture.

Bake in shallow pan.

When cold – cut into desired shapes.

Split cakes through the center and put together with softened jelly.

Brush mocha frosting over sides and roll in coconut.

Brush top with frosting and pipe a border round top of cake.

Put a very small spoonful of jelly in the center.


Mocha Frosting


3 tbsp butter

3 tbsp strong hot coffee

3 tbsp cocoa

1 c sifted icing sugar

Add butter to coffee – when melted stir in cocoa blending smooth.

Add icing sugar a little at a time mixing smooth.

The frosting should be soft enough to spread easily.
