Barbara, Dorcas & Frances.


An idea that became a reality when family bonded together to gather recipes from the past. I would like to thank everyone for their submissions. Many a memory we have from these tasty treats and hopefully by putting them all together ~
many more can be made.

Cookies ~ Snickerdoodles

Snickerdoodles


  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ½ cup shortening
  • 1 ½ cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons white sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

Cream together butter, shortening, 1½ cups sugar, the eggs and the vanilla. Blend in the flour, cream of tartar, soda and salt. Shape dough by rounded spoonfuls into balls.

Mix the 2 tablespoons sugar and the cinnamon. Roll balls of dough in mixture. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased baking sheets.

Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until set but not too hard. Remove immediately from baking sheets.


Cookies ~ Yangtze Yummies

Aunt Jeanne’s Yangtze Yummies


1 ½ c. chocolate chips

1 ½ cups butterscotch chips

¾ cup salted peanuts

1 ¼ cups chow mein noodles

Melt chips and add peanuts and noodles.

Spoon out onto waxed paper on a cookie sheet and refrigerate.

Cookies ~ Thumbprint

Gina’s Thumbprint Cookies


1 c. margarine

1 c. chunky peanut butter

1 c. sugar

1 c. firmly packed light brown sugar

2 eggs

1 tsp. vanilla

2 ½ c. flour

1 tsp. baking soda

1 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. salt

Additional sugar

Kisses, jam, etc.

In bowl with mixer at med.

Speed, beat first 6 ingredients until fluffy.

At low speed, beat in next 4 ingredients.

Chill dough several hours.

Roll into 1” balls, roll in sugar and place onto greased cookie sheets.

Bake at 350 degrees for 12-15 minutes or until browned.

Immediately press nuts or candies into cookies, or use thumb and fill with jam.

Cool and enjoy!

Cookies ~ Sugar

Mom’s (Aunt Jeanne’s) Sugar Cookies (probably Grammie’s too!)


5 c. flour

2 c. sugar

1 tbsp. baking powder

1 tbsp. cream of tartar

½ tsp. baking soda

2 c. butter/margarine

Mix well and then add

4 eggs

¼ c of milk

Bake at 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

Cookies ~ Shortbread

Grammie’s Shortbread


1 c. light brown sugar

1 pound butter

Cream together.

Slowly blend in 4 cups of all purpose flour.

Bake at 300 degrees – 30 mins.

½ pound butter

½ c. icing sugar

2 c. flour

Salt

Bake 300 degrees – 30 mins.

Cookies ~ Porcupines

Porcupines

(Chocolate Macaroons)


Boil together:

1 c sugar

¼ c milk

Add:

1 ½ c rolled oats

½ c coconut

½ tsp vanilla

¼ tsp salt

¼ c cocoa

Mix thoroughly and spoon drop onto a buttered pan or wax paper.

Refrigerate until firm.

Cookies ~ Peanut Butter Drops

1 c of flour

¼ tsp. cloves

½ cup of shortening

¾ cup of peanut butter

1 c. of brown sugar

2 tbsp. milk

½ tsp. ginger

1 tsp. soda

2 eggs

1 c. of peanuts

Cook approx. 15 minutes. 330-350 degrees.

Cookies ~ Peanut Butter

Peanut Butter Cookies


1 c shortening

1 c brown sugar

1 c peanut butter

2 tsp baking soda

1 c sugar

2 eggs

2 c flour

¼ tsp salt

Cream shortening, sugar egg and peanut butter.

Add flour, soda, salt and blend well.

No temp or time…. 350 usually works


Cookies ~ Orange Coconut Chews

¼ c butter

1 c brown sugar

1 egg

1 tsp vanilla

2 tsp grated orange rind

juice from one orange

½ c flour

½ tsp salt

1 tsp baking powder

1 c coconut

1 c chopped dates

Melt butter – add sugar and mix until combined. Mix in egg, vanilla and orange juice. Add dry ingredients until well incorporated.

Stir in dates and coconut.

Bake in a 7x11 lightly sprayed pan

350 for 30 minutes

Cookies ~ Oatmeal Gumdrop

Oatmeal Gumdrop Cookies


½ c shortening

½ c butter

½ c white sugar

½ c brown sugar

2 c oatmeal

½ c walnuts

1 egg

1 c flour

½ tsp soda

½ tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

1 c gumdrops

**Instead of gumdrops can add:

½ c chopped dates, ¼ c each red & green cherries.

350 oven


Cookies ~ Oatmeal Chocolate Chip

1 c sugar

1 c brown sugar

1 c butter/margarine

2 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

1 ½ c flour

1 tsp baking soda

2 c oatmeal

1 c coconut (fancy flake)

1 ½ c chocolate chips

350 oven


Cookies ~ Oatmeal

Oatmeal Cookies


¼ cup shortening

¼ cup butter

½ cup brown sugar

½ tsp vanilla

½ tsp soda

2 tbsp hot water

¾ cup flour

½ tsp salt

¼ tsp nutmeg (if desired)

1 cup rolled oats

Cream shortening, butter, brown sugar and vanilla. Mix soda with hot water and add to creamed mixture. Measure flour and combine with salt and nutmeg, stirring well to blend. Stir in oats. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture. Mix well. Shape dough into 1 inch balls and place on greased baking sheets.

Flatten with tines of fork.

Bake at 400 for 5 – 6 minutes

Grammie Stiles’ Melting Moments



Cream together: 1 c. butter

¾ c. brown sugar

1 egg

Stir Together and add: 1 ¾ c. flour

½ tsp. baking powder

¼ tsp. soda

½ tsp. cream of tartar

½ tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla

Drop on cookie sheet. Place cherry or nut on top.

Bake 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

1 c butter

1 c brown sugar

1 c white sugar

2 beaten eggs

½ c toasted sesame seeds

vanilla

1 ½ c flour

1 tsp baking soda

3 c oatmeal

Flatten and bake at 400 until browned.

(Ella was Donnie Reid’s Mother)


1 c. Shortening

1 c. Brown Sugar

1 egg

2 c. Flour

1 tsp. soda

2 tsps. Cream of Tartar

½ tsp. salt

1 tsp. vanilla

Drop on cookie sheets – then press down with fork. Place cherry or nut on top. Bake 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes.

Cookies ~ Chocolate Chip Cookies


Chocolate Chip Cookies


1 c flour

½ tsp salt

½ tsp soda

½ c shortening

¼ c sugar

½ c brown sugar

1 tsp vanilla

1 egg

1 pkg chocolate chips

½ c nuts (optional)

Cream shortening, brown sugar, sugar, vanilla and egg.

Blend flour, soda and salt into creamed mixture.

Add chips and nuts.

Bake for 10 minutes in a 350 oven.


Cookies ~ Birds Nests


Bird’s Nests


¾ c butter

1 c brown sugar

1 egg yolk

1 c flour

½ tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

Fancy coconut

Reserve egg white – set aside

Cream first 3 ingredients – add remaining. Form into teaspoon size balls – roll in egg white then in coconut. Make an indent in the center.

Bake at 325 for 10 minutes.

Remove from oven and press down in center again. Bake another 10 minutes or until golden.

Remove from pan to rack. While still warm put a small amount of jam or jelly in the center of each.

**Add flour a couple of tablespoons at a time if it is hard to roll or spreads too much.


Cookies ~ Oatmeal Date Filled Cookies

Oatmeal Date Filled Cookies

1 c. brown sugar
1 c. shortening
2 eggs
2 c. flour
2 c. oatmeal
1 tsp. soda
1/2 tsp. baking powder

FILLING:
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1 lb. dates, chopped
A little lemon juice

Combine all ingredients for cookies. Cook date filling and let cool a little. Roll out dough on floured board. With donut cutter roll out half of the dough with the hole of cutter out and other half with hole in. Put cookies on cookie sheet. Put the cookie without the hole on sheet, put teaspoon of filling on top of base of cookie top with cookie with the hole out so filling shows through hole.
Bake in 350 degree oven until lightly browned, 10 minutes.

Cookies ~ Dropped Date Filled Cookies

1 c shortening

2 c brown suger

2 eggs

1 ½ tsp soda

1 ½ tsp vanilla

1 tsp salt

4 c flour

Filling: 1 c chopped dates

1 c water

1 tsp lemon juice

½ c brown sugar

2 tsp flour

½ c nuts – optional

Cream shortening & sugar. Add eggs and beat. Dissolve soda in water and mix with shortening, sugar & vanilla. Sift together flour and salt.

Drop by spoons on greased sheet. Dent dough and add filling.

Top with a little dough.

Bake 10 min – 400 oven
